‘One Nation, One Election’ bill likely to be introduced in parliament special session

The government is considering introducing the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill during a special session of Parliament scheduled from September 18 to 22, according to sources. ‘One Nation, One Election’ aims to hold both Lok Sabha polls and state assembly elections simultaneously. This concept has been discussed in the past and studied by the Law Commission of India.

Currently, elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies are typically held separately at the end of their respective terms. This results in two election cycles each year, with different state assemblies being voted on during each cycle.

Under the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, elections for both the Lok Sabha and all state assemblies would be synchronized and conducted on a single day.
